Minecraft trident, enchantments, and how to repair

Rule the seas when you find out how to get a Minecraft trident, learn how to repair it, and discover its most powerful enchantments.

Steve swims through the ocean, surrounded by colourful coral, while carrying a Minecraft trident.

How do you get a Minecraft trident? The trident is one of the coolest weapons in Minecraft even though it doesn’t deal the most damage. The aquatic item also has its own unique uses, so it’s a pretty good idea to get yours hands on one, even if you’re not going to use it to attack.

This awesome item also happens to be one of the most difficult tools to get your hands on in the sandbox game though, so we’re here to help you get one. Once you’ve finally got your hands on a Minecraft trident, keep it going by finding out how to repair it, and kit it out with the best Minecraft enchantments – now you’re ready to explore the open seas in style.

A drowned, which is an underwater zombie, holding a Minecraft trident.

How to get a Minecraft trident

Minecraft tridents can only be obtained by defeating Drowned mobs who are holding them. Unfortunately, these hostile mobs can kill you fast with a trident in hand, so you need to be prepared.

Head underwater and look for the Drowned Minecraft mobs. These are essentially underwater zombies and attack in water – particularly after dark. While they can’t leave water in dry weather, they can when it rains, so keep an eye out for them on rainy days at the beach.

Rarely, these drowned chaps will spawn into the world holding a trident, so you simply have to defeat them for a chance of a trident dropping, but that chance is very small at 8.5%. Normal zombies that find themselves in water for too long will also become drowned, but they won’t be any use to you as they won’t be holding a trident.

If you’re playing in Bedrock Edition then there is a slim chance that a trident will drop from Drowned that are not holding one, so it’s worth slaying any Drowned you come across while attempting to get your blocky hands on one of these. You can also use Minecraft seeds to create underwater worlds for a chance to spawn Downed zombie mobs.

In Java Edition, only 6.25% of Drowned spawn holding a trident, while the chance is slightly higher in Bedrock Edition at 15%. You can boost your chances if you have the Looting enchantment, so make sure you head out with that equipped to make your farming more efficient.

Minecraft trident repair

Those drop rates mean the Minecraft trident is pretty tricky to get hold of and you’ll likely spend hours diving around in search of one. Making matter worse then, you’ll want to farm a few of them, as the random durability means it’s only a matter of time until one breaks. To repair a trident, simply combine two tridents at a Minecraft anvil.

The durability of a trident in Minecraft is the same as an iron sword – 250 – and the durability degrades by a single point with each use. If you don’t want to spend much time farming for tridents then consider enchanting it with Mending so the durability takes care of itself.

The best trident enchantments

The best Minecraft enchantments to put on a trident will depend on what you want to use it for, but mending and unbreaking are essentials for extended the durability of your rare item. As we said above, it’s so hard to get, you don’t really want it to break on you.

If you want to use your trident for combat, then impaling is an excellent choice, as well as loyalty, so it returns to you when thrown at range.

However, if you’d rather use your trident to farm mob heads, you can equip it with channeling, and build a charged creeper farm. Charged creepers are created when a creeper is struck by lightning, and mobs killed by a charged creeper drop their own head – an incredible unique item in vanilla Minecraft for this reason.

Here’s the full list of Minecraft enchantments compatible with the trident:

  • Channeling – if a thrown trident hits a mob during a thunderstorm then a lightning bolt is summoned, dealing heaps of damage (cannot be used with riptide).
  • Curse of Vanishing – trident disappears upon death.
  • Impaling – deals extra melee damage and ranged damage to aquatic mobs (not Drowned). In Bedrock Edition this buff extends to all mobs who are in rain or underwater.
  • Loyalty – thrown tridents return to the player after a few seconds (cannot be used with riptide).
  • Mending – when the trident is equipped, any collected XP orbs repair the trident instead of boosting the player’s XP.
  • Riptide – throwing a trident underwater or in rain transports the player, dealing splash damage (cannot be used with loyalty or channeling).
  • Unbreaking – increases durability.

And there you have it, everything you need to know to get your very own Minecraft trident, repair it, and enchant it. The trident is definitely one of the best weapons in vanilla Minecraft, so it’s definitely worth adding to your collection. You can also create and customize a Minecraft shield to use alongside your Minecraft trident to take down enemies, especially if you’re venturing to the Minecraft Nether.
